The Challenge:
This Accelerator Project has developed a test-bed environment to provide hands-on experience with running live production applications on different software platforms.
This is currently hosted at Techex’s site in Bracknell, UK, but as architected, it could be deployed as edge compute for a live production event.
We have deployed Microsoft’s Azure Stack Hyperconverged Infrastructure and Google’s Distributed Cloud clusters on COTS servers and GPUs and tested several applications from Accelerator participants on those frameworks (Special thanks to Accelerator participants: AMD, Microsoft, Google, Techex, LAMA, VizRT, Open Broadcast Systems, Zixi, InSync, Limitless, Singular.live, Grass Valley).
At the IBC2023 show, the team demonstrated a simple live production workflow on this test environment with NDI sources, vision mix, graphics, audio mix and streaming from Bracknell to the stand in Amsterdam, where visitors could operate and view the mixer remotely.
This Accelerator does not end with IBC 2023 however! The team learned a lot about resourcing of this type of infrastructure, about the skills required to build and configure deployments and how to manage and monitor them, and how this differs from relying on SaaS providers to look after this.
We are planning to extend the existing test environment to provide capabilities that were not shown at IBC, such as network and stream monitoring, orchestration and production communications, and potentially to support higher-end use cases such as UHD production.
We will also be talking with other industry groups about how best to incubate and trial a software-first approach. Watch this space on IBC!
