Head of Broadcast & Connected Systems, BBC

Phil Layton initially joined the BBC in 1983 and has worked on a wide variety of projects involving hardware, software and systems engineering.

Since 1996 he has worked on all major BBC digital television initiatives including the initial satellite and terrestrial service launches and their subsequent evolution into Freesat and Freeview. 

As Head of the Broadcast & Connected Systems team within BBC R&D he is responsible for a number of research teams covering linear broadcast, video encoding, IP distribution and packaging, sustainability, standardisation and advanced video formats such as UHD. 

He led the first BBC broadcast and IP UHD trials of the 2014 FIFA World Cup and has continued to contribute significantly to the ongoing BBC iPlayer live and on-demand UHD HDR trials.
