Tomoya Onishi
Tomoya Onishi is a Systems Engineer and Project Manager at NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation) with more than 14 years of experience in broadcast audio systems and media infrastructure projects. Specializing in Audio-over-IP (AoIP) technologies, media systems integration, and cloud-enabled production workflows, he has played a key role in NHK’s transition toward IP-based and software-driven broadcast operations, with a particular focus on SMPTE ST 2110, AES67, and next-generation media architectures.
At NHK, Tomoya has led the design and deployment of several major modernization projects. These include the renewal of NHK’s Radio Center with an SMPTE ST 2110-30-based audio infrastructure, the development of immersive audio post-production facilities, and the implementation of IP-based audio systems for outside broadcasting (OB) vehicles. He has also contributed to the modernization of master control and audio playout systems, improving operational efficiency, scalability, and long-term sustainability across NHK’s broadcast facilities.
In parallel with infrastructure modernization, Tomoya is actively exploring cloud-native production technologies. His recent work includes evaluating cloud-hosted digital audio workstations (DAWs), cloud-based audio mixing environments, and methods for transporting professional audio using ST 2110-30 in cloud environments. Through proof-of-concept projects focused on virtualized production tools and distributed workflows, he is helping to identify practical approaches to more flexible and resource-efficient broadcast operations.
Before moving into system engineering and project management, Tomoya worked as an audio mixer and broadcast operator for music and live productions. Combining operational experience with technical expertise, he brings a practical perspective to the design of next-generation broadcast systems and contributes to the ongoing evolution of IP-based and cloud-enabled media production.
