Tomoya Murakami

Tomoya Murakami is a research engineer in the Smart Production Research Division at the Science and Technology Research Laboratories (STRL) of NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation). He received his M.E. in engineering from the University of Tokyo, Japan, in 2016 and joined NHK in 2017. After working in broadcast engineering, he moved to NHK STRL in 2021.
NHK STRL is Japan’s only research institute dedicated to broadcasting technology. Its mission includes conducting research and developing technologies that make essential information accessible to all viewers, including people with disabilities. As part of this mission, Murakami is engaged in the research and development of accessibility technologies for Deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers, with a particular focus on an avatar-based Japanese Sign Language translation system.
Murakami is currently working towards providing news and other timely information through sign language CG. The development of this technology is intended to improve access to essential information by enabling the accurate and efficient production of sign language content for broadcasting and public-service applications. His broader research interests include accessibility technology, sign language processing, computer graphics and computer vision. He is a member of the Information Processing Society of Japan (IPSJ) and the Institute of Image Information and Television Engineers (ITE).
