Thomas Stockhammer
Dr. Thomas Stockhammer received the Dipl.-Ing. and Dr.-Ing. degrees from the Technical University of Munich. He was co-founder and CEO of Nomor Research for ten years before joining Qualcomm in 2014, where he currently serves as Senior Director, Technical Standards.
Throughout his career, he has co-authored more than 250 research publications, contributed to more than 300 patents, and authored thousands of standards contributions. He holds leadership, board, chair, and rapporteur positions across numerous international standards organizations, including 3GPP, MPEG, DVB, IETF, ATSC, CTA, ETSI, the Streaming Video Technology Alliance (SVTA), the DASH Industry Forum, and the Metaverse Standards Forum. His work spans multimedia communications, media delivery, adaptive streaming, immersive media, XR, artificial intelligence for media, television distribution, and next-generation mobile systems.
Dr. Stockhammer leads and coordinates several industry initiatives, including MPEG immersive media activities, SVTA DASH-related work, 3GPP advanced media delivery, 6G Media and XR standardization, and DVB activities related to media delivery over mobile networks. He has been instrumental in the development of widely deployed media technologies including MPEG-DASH, CMAF, immersive media standards, and 5G media delivery solutions.
He has received numerous international awards, including the INCITS Technical Excellence Award (2013), the 3GPP Excellence Award (2017), the CTA Technology & Standards Achievement Awards (2019 and 2023), the ISO/IEC Excellence Award (2024), the IEC 1906 Award (2024), the DASH-IF Leadership Award (2024), and the SVTA Industry Fellow Award. He is also a recipient of Emmy® Inventor Awards for contributions to both MPEG-DASH (2022) and CMAF (2025). In 2023, he was elevated to IEEE Fellow for contributions to media delivery and video streaming standards. He is a frequent keynote speaker, technical program committee member, and panelist at major international industry events
