Rich Welsh
Rich Welsh is a media technologist, investor and entrepreneur with over 20 years of experience developing software and services across image, audio, 3D, accessibility and metadata for Hollywood and beyond. His career has spanned multiple large corporates, media groups and startups. He now holds multiple board and advisory roles. Starting his career in 35mm film audio, Rich progressed to the digital cinema, Immersive and 3D, cloud SaaS platforms and first developed AI with his startup Sundog Media Toolkit.
Rich is Co-Founder and Chairman of Volustor, a 3D scanning platform for spatial data management, processing and visualisation. Their unique solution not only securely captures and organises volumetric data, but provides authentication and provenance including proprietary spatial AI for protecting digital twins, including talent, copyrighted material, locations and industrial IP. Volustor was forged in the furnace of high-end Hollywood movie production, and is now across multiple industries including AI world model training, media, gaming, metaverse, e-commerce and industrial applications.
Rich serves as current President of SMPTE, the global society of media professionals, technologists, and engineers. In this role, he chairs the Executive Committee and Board of Governors who set the strategic direction of the organization, and fosters collaboration and education among its members.
Rich is also an investor and advisor with Hallstone Ventures, a Silicon Valley and Hollywood seed-stage fund focussed on AI and advanced technology startups in media.
Rich holds a Doctor of Technology (HC), and a Bachelor of Science with Honors in Media Technology from Solent University. He has previously held senior roles at Dolby Laboratories, Technicolor and Deluxe Entertainment. Rich was formerly founder and CEO of SaaS platform Sundog Media Toolkit in 2013 which was acquired by Deluxe in 2021.
