Phil Layton

Head of Applied Research, BBC

Phil leads the Media Applied Research Area within BBC Research & Development. Over a long career in broadcasting Phil has worked on a on a wide variety of projects involving hardware, software and systems engineering. Since 1996 he has contributed to all the major BBC digital TV projects across Freeview, Freesat, Youview and Freely and also BBC integrations with third party platforms. The team is currently focused on production and distribution issues related to the transition from broadcasting to Internet distribution focusing on media tooling, video encoding, streaming, 5G and sustainability.

Phil studied Electrical Engineering at Imperial College, London, he is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, a Fellow of Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers and was recognised in the 2024 presentation of a Technology & Engineering Emmy® Award to BBC Research & Development for our work on HDR workflows.
