Kohei Tomioka
Kohei Tomioka received the B.E. and M.E. degrees in Engineering Science from Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan, in 2011 and 2013, respectively. He joined Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) in 2013 and has been engaged in the research and development of advanced imaging systems. Since 2016, his work has focused on image sensors and professional broadcast cameras for next-generation media applications.
His research interests include image sensor architecture, image signal processing, and scene-adaptive imaging technologies. He is currently working on the development of a novel scene-adaptive camera system that dynamically optimizes image acquisition according to local scene characteristics. The system enables independent control of imaging parameters, including spatial resolution, frame rate, and exposure time, for localized regions within an image. By combining a custom CMOS image sensor with real-time feedback control, the camera analyzes local brightness and motion and adaptively adjusts imaging conditions during operation. This approach enhances overall image quality by simultaneously suppressing overexposure, underexposure, and motion blur within a single image.
At NHK Science & Technology Research Laboratories, he is involved in the development of next-generation imaging technologies for broadcasting and immersive media. He is a member of the Institute of Image Information and Television Engineers (ITE) of Japan.
