Kimio Hamasaki

Kimio Hamasaki has worked in the audio engineering and broadcast media industries for over 40 years, including many years at Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK), the last 30 in senior positions. This has given him extensive experience in music production and recording, research and education in cutting-edge audio technology, standards development, team leadership, and project management.
He is a producer and balance engineer for music recordings, a researcher in spatial audio and audio reproduction, an educator in audio engineering and acoustics, and a consultant in audio engineering. He has recorded and produced numerous orchestral and operatic works with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bavarian State Opera, the NHK Symphony Orchestra, and other renowned international orchestras and opera companies in 2.0, 5.1, 9.1, 11.1, and 22.2 multichannel sound formats. He has also developed digital audio recording equipment and innovative microphone techniques for natural, immersive sound, such as the Hamasaki Square and Hamasaki Cube, as well as advanced spatial audio systems, including the 22.2 multichannel sound system and the Advanced Multichannel Audio System for Reproducing a Live Sound Field with Ultimate Sensation of Presence.
He has received several prestigious awards, including the Prix Italia Perugia Award, the CATs Audio Award, and the IBC2003 President's Award.
His recent research interests include immersive audio systems and sound recording techniques, as well as auditory models for natural sound reproduction via headphones, earphones, and loudspeakers, with the intention of developing next-generation audio recording and playback systems.
He has extensive experience in international standardization related to audio technology, including work with the AES, SMPTE, and IEC. He currently serves as co-chair of the AES Technical Committee on Broadcasting and Online Delivery and vice-chair of the AES Technical Committee on Audio Production. He is president of ARTSRIDGE LLC, chief scientist of final Inc., and a Fellow of the AES.
