Joe Copland currently works in BBC Research and Development (R&D) in the Artificial Intelligence (AI) area, specifically in the Computer Vision team. He is a Senior R&D Engineer, having joined the R&D graduate scheme in 2020. The computer vision team investigates how AI can be used to tackle problems around the BBC, mainly focusing on television production and News. Recent projects include AI image detection for journalists, leveraging character animation models to protect interviewees’ identities and using AI to repair degraded images from the BBC’s physical photo archive. Prior to working at the BBC, he studied Physics at Durham University.
