Professor David Crawford has degrees of BA(Hons), MSc in Telecoms, and PhD in Image Coding. He is a Professor at the University of Essex and Ravensbourne University London in the UK, with interests in mobile, broadcast and broadband networks for new media. David lectures in Transmission Systems, and specialises in the transfer of knowledge and intellectual property from academia to the commercial sector. David has been actively involved in various international technical Standards Forums. He was chairman of the ETSI Working Group harmonising digital transmitter standards; and has previously led Technical Work Groups for the European DVB Project on digital broadcast services and has been active in international Study Groups for spectrum and regulatory issues. He has held senior posts with several blue chip companies during his career, including British Telecom and Crown Castle in the UK, and Bell Labs in the USA where he worked on HDTV coding and transmission systems. Between 2003 – 2005, David was Managing Director for Harris Corporation's European Broadcast business, running technical facilities in Austria, France and the UK. Since 2005, he has divided his time between his University activities and working as an independent Consultant in the broadcast and telecoms arenas; he is also a part-time Director of a small start-up company, TeamCast of France, which develops high tech digital modulation products. David is a Member of the Royal Television Society, a Fellow of the IET, and was Chairman of the Conference Committee for the International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) from 2006 until 2009. Since 2009, David has helped produce the Technology Sessions for the IBC Conference, and managed the Future Zone Exhibits at IBC.
