Arturo Fuentes Calle

Arturo Fuentes Calle is a researcher, educator, and audiovisual creator working at the intersection of artificial intelligence, computer vision, and professional media production. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Telecommunication Engineering at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and conducting his research at the Computer Vision Center, where he develops AI-based systems designed to support professional decision-making in audiovisual production and medical imaging.
His research in broadcast and live production focuses on multi-camera environments, scene understanding, camera coverage, visual activity analysis, and intelligent decision-support tools for directors. His work explores how information from multiple video sources can be integrated into unified spatial representations, helping professionals identify covered, overlapping, and unattended areas of a scene. Rather than replacing creative roles, his research examines how artificial intelligence can organise complex visual information, reduce cognitive load, and assist editorial decisions while preserving human supervision and creative control.
Arturo has a multidisciplinary background spanning cognitive science, audiovisual creation, digital imaging, and technical development. He has also worked in technical setup, broadcast supervision, video editing, and live directing for major musical events, including Sónar Barcelona, as well as for large-scale corporate productions. This combination of research and hands-on production experience informs his human-centred approach to technology and his interest in building systems that are reliable, interpretable, and compatible with real professional workflows.
Alongside his academic research, he has contributed to numerous R&D and innovation projects involving artificial intelligence, image analysis, interactive systems, immersive environments, museography, and audiovisual communication. He is involved in IA-4, a company created to develop bespoke AI solutions for businesses, with a particular specialisation in computer vision and image-analysis technologies.
He is also co-founder of LANG Iberia, teaches Digital Imaging and Generative AI, and is the author of Foundations of the Digital Image: From Photography to Generative AI and Getting Started with AI.
