Alberto Dueñas

Alberto Dueñas founded a stealth-mode startup focused on next-generation video compression technologies and deployment tools. Over the past three decades (1996–2026), he has helped leading companies like Facebook and WBD optimize video compression and delivery. Alberto has contributed to standards including AVC/H.264 and HEVC/H.265, and now concentrates on developing new video coding formats through MPEG/JVET and the Alliance for Open Media (AOM). He aims to lead the development of a new codec that will revolutionize video again, achieving widespread adoption similar to AVC/H.264, but with much lower bit rates and enhanced functionality.
His journey in video technology spans nearly every layer, from simulation and hardware to streaming. He joined WBD to improve streaming media quality, building on his two years at Facebook where he designed hardware video-encoder accelerators, as well as work at Arm developing licensable video-compression products used across the industry. As founder and CTO of NGCodec, he architected HEVC-based silicon IP, gaining valuable experience in bringing codecs from concept to market. At Cavium, he developed ultra-low-latency wireless video-compression technology, SoCs, and wireless-display systems, and also helped establish W&W Communications, creating AVC/H.264 encoders and decoders from the ground up.
His early roles included designing imaging and vision SoCs at AnaFocus, writing real-time MPEG-4 software at PRODYS, and conducting research and working within MPEG standardization at DMV-NDS-Tandberg Television (now MediaKind)—the foundation of a career spent shaping how the world consumes video. Since then, Alberto has contributed to key industry standards such as MPEG-2/4 AAC, MPEG-4 Visual, AVC/H.264, HEVC/H.265, and continued work on AV1 and VVC.
He holds a Master of Engineering in Telecommunications from the Technical University of Madrid (UPM), which marked the beginning of a career dedicated to transforming bold ideas about video into technology used worldwide. Nearly 30 years later, Alberto’s curiosity still drives him as he builds the codec he believes will define the next chapter of video.
