With the industry’s return to RAI for the first IBC since 2019, the IET Media Technology Network ran their ‘John Logie Baird Lecture’ series at IBC2022. They have run the JLB Lecture’s for many years at the IET HQ at Savoy Place with the purpose of their sessions being to reflect on the state of the TV and Broadcast industry, look at the important trends shaping the industry and offer an understanding of what to expect from these industries in the next five years. With COVID having changed the industry in profound ways, the IET’s three-part sessions gave unique insights into the present and future state of these industries.

We have seen the rapid move to IP across all areas, but what can we expect for the next five years? What is the next big thing and what will disappear? Will UHD succeed despite slow adoption by broadcasters? Will broadcast itself survive?  How are we going to manage the evolution of video codecs and is there such a thing as sufficient compression?

This session looked at the latest movements in audio, the sticking points and how this might change in the near future. What factors are holding back Next Generation Audio adoption? What are the limits on live audio production and post-production in the cloud? How would Object Based Media adoption throughout the whole value chain affect audio workflows?
