D2M: A Video Distribution Network for the 6G Era

While voice and data transmission capabilities have evolved with each generation of 3GPP mobile technology, video distribution has followed a largely separate path, progressing from terrestrial broadcast television to cable and satellite networks, and more recently to IP-based streaming platforms. D2M creates a clear pathway for the convergence of these traditionally distinct ecosystems, enabling the efficient delivery of all content types of content across all classes of connected devices.

Successive generations of mobile technology have progressively broadened both payload and delivery capability: 2G supported voice over circuit-switched cellular networks. 4G added data and streaming capability over IP-switched cellular and WiFi. 5G introduced low-latency data with device-to-device transmission on a semi-autonomous, virtualised core. 6G extends this trajectory further, adding native video to low-latency data, combining linear and non-linear delivery, introducing direct-to-mobile (D2M) transmission alongside cellular, WiFi and D2D, and moving to a fully autonomous, AI-driven network control layer.
