Future of Broadcasting - 5G broadcast and Brazilian TV3.0
This two-paper session shines a bright light on the significant innovation continuing to take place in Terrestrial broadcasting.
Our first paper from Globo presents Brazil’s next generation Digital TV standard, “Lighthouse” – which incorporates ATSC 3.0 physical layer features like Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO), dual polarization transmission, Transmission Identification (TxID), and Layered Division Multiplexing (LDM). Details from a recent trial are also presented with commercial deployment expected in 2026.
Our second paper from RAI, presents results of 5G broadcast trials undertaken in Rome and Turin. The study made use of (software modified) commercially available mobile phone handsets – highlighting just how close and compelling such a deployment could be.
A supporting paper for this session is also available, which, introduces Broadcast-to-Everything (B2X), a new physical layer Radio Access Network (RAN) standard being developed by ATSC.
