From 6K to holographic projection and from esports to the FIFA World Cup, this year’s 10 IBC Innovation Awards finalists showed a clear trend towards global co-operation and remarkable advances in bringing new engagement to content.

Although we never look for a theme in our list of finalists, the shortlist reflected the wider industry. This year you can definitely see that there were a number of projects which were global in scale and which used new opportunities in connectivity to bring us astounding images, whether that is capturing life under the sea or the excitement of sports.

FOX Sports’ new NASCAR virtual studio leverages the real-time rendering capabilities and photoreal visual fidelity of Epic Games’ Unreal Engine to provide race fans with new depths of analysis and storytelling for the sport via mixed reality broadcasts. The ultra-customizable facility lets analysts interact with photoreal 3D graphics and augmented reality elements in real time, providing in-depth analysis on race car construction, racetrack materials, banking angles, and more – all with unprecedented levels of visual complexity. Additionally, the robust virtual studio enables broadcast teams to deliver immersive reporting remotely, rather than traveling with a mobile studio to each race.
Remote production for League of Legends

Riot Games leads the esports industry with the broadcast of the 2018 World Championship of the League of Legends, carried globally by more than 30 television channels and digital platforms to more than 99.6 million viewers.
Using new remote production technologies, the tournament was broadcast from Korea while being centrally managed and produced from the Riot Games’ headquarters in Los Angeles in 18 studios dedicated to 18 different regions/languages, delivering a broadcast experience that rivals some of the biggest professional sporting events.

SailGP has delivered an innovative and environmentally considerate solution to provide high-quality and consistent TV coverage of the new, annual global sailing championship. The project enables live world feeds to be fully produced in London. The television director, more than 10,000 miles away, has access to over 40 video and data sources including; the award-winning, LiveLine FX technology for impactful on-screen graphics and data derived from a total of 1,200 sensors placed on the boats and athletes.
Key innovations in this landmark remote production include the integration of super-low latency technologies and the in-house design of bespoke equipment such as IP controlled waterproof cameras
Holographic projection over 5G

In February 2019, a young guitarist joined a rock band on stage in Bucharest, performing as a live hologram from a studio 2 km away. A spectacular showcase of Vodafone Romania's 5G technology and Musion 3D's EyeLiner™ holographic foil, the event gathered thousands of fans, was live streamed on Facebook and became Vodafone’s 2019 flagship television commercial in Romania - with over 2 million YouTube views to date. Musion 3D used Dejero's EnGo mobile transmitters and Broadcast Servers to deliver video links to and from the studio, with the hologram streamed over a Huawei router and Vodafone 5G link.

BT Group’s BT Sport and EE deployed the world’s first live broadcasts based on 5G-enabled remote TV production – an innovation BT Sport plans to eventually use to increase the coverage available to viewers with more matches and highlights on air faster than before.

Associated Press transmitted live, broadcast-quality video from submersibles operating 200 metres below the surface of the Indian Ocean - creating broadcasting history.
Using cutting edge optical technology, footage was sent through the waves using LED light within the "blue" region of the electromagnetic spectrum - removing the need for submersibles carrying scientists from the UK-led Nekton Mission to be tethered to fiber optic cables.Viewers were taken on a journey through a never-before seen ocean kingdom using technology engineered by sub sea communications specialist Sonardyne with satellite transport courtesy of Inmarsat.

ETV Bharat and Aveco combined to automate news production and playout to 24 studios and 24 full time news channels for mobile phone-and-tablet live and on-demand viewership. Launched in 21 March 2019, ETV Bharat has 5,000 mobile journalists across India equipped and empowered with the latest news production technology. Aveco automates the live production, recording, and playout of these 24 mobile TV channels and provides the workflow automation to optimize on-demand version production. Together with other TV technology partners serving ETV Bharat, a new world-standard in mobile news production and distribution has been achieved.
6K 360˚ VR
End user: Deutsche Telekom

In December 2018, Deutsche Telekom commissioned a multi-partner collaboration to enable the world’s first multi-channel 6K 360-degree live sports stream, during a basketball match between Telekom Baskets Bonn and EWE Baskets Oldenburg from the Telekom Dome in Germany. The live streams were delivered to customers of Deustche Telekom’s commercial Magenta VR service via a consumer app. The success of this proof-of-concept event showcased the ability to stream viewport adaptive 360 video content live from sports events to a base of real-world consumers, overcoming complex obstacles of VR production and delivering higher resolution VR to enable a truly immersive user experience.
