Next Generation Broadcast Architecture

End User: Sinclair Broadcast

Technology Partners:

  • ONE Media
  • TeamCast

TeamCastTo meet the new requirements of delivering both linear and non-linear programming to new audiences using multiple types of receivers, and targeting new sources of revenues, Sinclair Broadcast Group entirely reconsidered the traditional broadcasting network architecture, to become cellular with a higher number of lower power transmitters combining their coverage in Single Frequency Networks.

To build these many SFNs, Sinclair Broadcast Group (USA), TeamCast (France) and ONE Media (USA) proposed a radically new approach using a Centralised Modulation Process and distributing a ready to transmit digital signal to transmitters through a full IP network.

They have developed the technology, successfully tested it in real size and this innovative concept is now going to nationwide deployment by Sinclair Broadcast Group.

Fully Virtualised Playout

End User: DMC, a TVT company

Technology Partners:

  • Cisco
  • Equinix
  • Pebble Beach Systems
  • Red Hat
  • Super Micro
  • VMware

DMCA European first, DMC, a TVT company’s fully virtualised software defined ‘private broadcast cloud’ provides DMC , a TVT company's customers with innovative media logistics, publishing and distribution services that drive the future of next generation entertainment. Hosted at DMC, a TVT company's re-imagined network operations, media management and distribution facility in Amsterdam, the world’s most connected hub, the platform provides international content owners with a passport to 700 million European viewers.

The project, which took 24 months from conception to go live, has delivered a ground-breaking industry first – a true private broadcast cloud. The platform is live today, delivering 30 channels. Once the full migration of the remaining channels from the old facility is completed, 80 channels in Europe will be using it.

With this new platform, DMC, a TVT company can commission and deliver new channels to market faster than ever before – a matter of hours instead of weeks – with the future potential to further reduce this to minutes. In addition, DMC, a TVT company's fully virtualised platform offers its clients unprecedented scale and capacity, extending the type and quality of services available, such as pop-up channels for market testing and companion channels for special events on OTT platforms.

End User: Viacom 18

Technology Partners:

  • Google

ViacomVOOT, from the house of Viacom18, is a leading over-the-top premium video streaming platform in India. Viacom18, a joint venture of Viacom Inc. and the Network18 Group, is one of India’s fastest growing entertainment networks. Launched in May-2016, VOOT has already achieved 30mn downloads, 20mn monthly active users and 50 min time spent per viewer per day. With a content library of ~35,000 hours, 500+ shows in multiple languages, VOOT caters to audiences across segments.

While mobile is the primary mode of access in India, patchy networks, high mobile data charges and limited device memory are constraints that limit content distribution. One way to overcome these barriers is replicating an app like experience on web browsers.  With this insight, VOOT team turned its mobile website into a Progressive Web App (PWA) by partnering with Google. This gives users easy access to quality video entertainment content and an optimal user experience. Within days of implementation, session time per user increased by 39%, page load time reduced by 80% and daily views per user increased by 15%. This collaborative project brings together a content powerhouse and a technology behemoth and attempts to expand the digital video consumption base in India.

Based on IP technology from Grass Valley and its partners Cisco and Lawo, and working with system integrator Videlio, these trucks give Arena the production facilities their clients demand today, with future-proof design flexibility — while achieving the goal of building the first generation of a new breed of IP-based OB trucks.

Grass Valley solutions powering the first completed truck include 28 LDX 86N Series cameras, four GV Node Real-Time IP Processing and Edge Routing Platforms with 54 KMX-4911 multiviewer cards, 180 Densité IPG-3901 Gateways and a Kayenne K-Frame Production Switcher, all working together to provide a powerful glass-to-glass IP workflow – rounding out the integrated package with a Cisco Nexus 9000 series switch and Lawo Virtual Studio Manager.
