VICE is pioneering the convergence of media-making technologies towards a dedicated industry standard. Utilizing machine learning, automated transcribing, sophisticated search, retrieval and recommendation systems, VICE continues to innovate how media is produced.
The project involves utilizing a variety of systems across multiple vendors to add an automated metadata tagging service to VICE’s media asset management system. By developing the solution with a central API, VICE’s team has a great degree of flexibility to alter and add to the solution as needed.
The final product delivers a richer search, leading to a more intuitive user experience and the ability to effectively expose curated media assets to post-production teams.
The benefits to VICE have been: reduced time to edit, enhanced value of media asset library, and improved online audience performance.
American Society of Cinematographers Color Decision List (ASC CDL)

For nearly 100 years, the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) has helped the motion picture and broadcast industries deliver compelling entertainment to audiences, and helped ensure that cinematographers can produce images of the highest quality. The ASC Technology Committee has worked to continue the ASC’s tradition by promoting high quality digital imaging and creating best-practices for digital production workflow.
When the industry switched from photochemical to digital imaging, we gained new creative opportunities, but also faced new challenges for managing our images. Recognizing those challenges, the DI subcommittee developed the ASC CDL (Color Decision List) to help visual creative intent be preserved from on-set through all stages of post-production.
The ASC CDL has been universally adopted - implemented in hundreds of software and hardware production and post-production systems and products, used across the globe in over 90% of motion pictures, over 70% of scripted series television, and 99% of visual effects post-production. The ASC CDL has received an Academy Technical Achievement Award, a Primetime Emmy Engineering Award, and an HPA Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation in Post Production.

A&E Docuseries is First of Its Kind to Stream Concurrent Live Feeds From Seven Different Cities, With Broadcast-Quality Video and Audio

To successfully capture and stream live video of police officers on patrol, Big Fish Entertainment, the creator and production company behind groundbreaking A&E docuseries “Live PD,” needed a live multicamera, multilocation production solution that would ensure reliable, synchronous, and low-latency transmission of broadcast-quality video and audio.
AVIWEST and VidOvation pushed the capabilities of bonded cellular technology beyond that of a typical stationary news report, enabling high-quality transmissions from six cities, with as many as 36 live video feeds simultaneously coming into the A&E control room. The crew uses AVIWEST PRO180-RA transmitters, including one for each HD cameras in every patrol car and two additional camera operators as well as an overhead drone to cover the action outside the vehicle.
The result: “‘Live PD” is the first primetime entertainment television program to deliver transparency in police work. Since the TV show has been on-air, viewers and industry insiders have been amazed at the quality. This was made possible by the tight collaboration between AVIWEST and VidOvation and their ability to provide Big Fish Entertainment with a live multi camera production solution that enables perfect synchronization.

We developed a server-mobile application (since the staffs shooting in remote locations or studios are using tablets to follow up their break) that permits everyone involved in the production process to visualize the recorded scenes that are either -previous or following- to the one that will be recorded.
In all cases and even for those shots that have not been recorded, the system presents the corresponding scene´s script extract, making handy valuable information for the recording of each new shot.
Our application is designed to permit the visualization of the “proxy” files and its unique and corresponding script and attach comments, photos and video as “Staff's notes”.
Digital End-to-End Workflow for NDR Foreign Studios

Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR) is a German public broadcaster and part of the ARD. As a leading producer of TV news NDR benefits from the network of overseas studios in Beijing, Tokyo, Singapore, Stockholm and London.
NDR upgraded these by creating an end-to-end workflow including a digital archive in each studio. EditShare flow manages the metadata based file system with Sony Optical Disc (ODA) for long time archiving. MoovIT’s HelmutFX software acts as a coordinator, connecting all of the systems in use including automatic synchronisation of Adobe Premiere Pro Editing and EditShare flow systems.

HBO MXF Tools

We developed a set of tools which serve to playback, verify, rename, and apply simple fixes to J2k bundled mezzanine files. These tools are designed to run on off-the-shelf, consumer-grade hardware, but are sophisticated enough to deal with the size and computation requirements imposed by the complexity of our Mezzanine format. They also run on any platform (linux, mac, pc). Beyond viewing for content, we needed to develop a file verification process that examines bundled files for errors that are common in remote delivery, but that commercially-available tools do not check for, such as truncation, overwrites, and essence corruption. These tools have increased throughput by 10x and allows us to work with programming that is not supported by current tape technology (such as High-Dynamic Range, Ultra-High Definition).
Integration of OBLO Living Home Automation into Existing STB Solution

Integration of OBLO Living solution for home automation (HA) into existing iWedia STB software solution brings significant benefits to both end users and service operators. By using integrated solution, end users are able to see notifications for events triggered by HA nodes (e.g. door opened, motion detected, etc. ) on the TV screen as well as to control things in their home by using a remote controller (e.g. set ambient light, get video from camera, etc.). When it comes to service operators, the main benefit is integration of home automation functionality within existing STB hardware, which allows them to expand their offer at low cost.

Ambient is well known for the 25 years long history line of the synonymous Lockit boxes - the market leading timecode generator.
The most advanced member of the Lockit Family is the Master Lockit. Not only providing highly accurate timecode but also extracting camera metadata live and broadcasting it to the script supervisor or DIT via WiFi. The latest member is the newly released NanoLockit with a matchbox-size form factor and easy-to-handle buttons. All Lockit Timecode devices have the wireless ACN technology onboard - keeping all Lockits in perfect sync.
LockitNetwork is an Ambient sister company. While Ambient is a hardware manufacturer, LockitNetwork is focusing on the software products. LockitNetwork provides on an all-in-one on-set metadata management system consisting of the LockitScript script supervising app and the LockitWebTools.
The MasterLockit can send camera metadata live to the LockitScript app via WiFi. In this scenario, the script supervisor is always in sync with the camera and never misses a waste clip again.
Shortly said: the combination of Lockit Timecode and the LockitNetwork metadata management helps production companies safe time and money in the post-production process. Production companies like Turiya Film at their film shoot “Tarantella”.
Making the 8K HDR drama "Seirei no Moribito"
In broadcasting, new technologies, such as IP technologies, are rapidly progressing. Among them, HDR is one of the most innovative technologies. We made the short drama by 8K HDR on last December and showed it at 2017 NAB show. It was so difficult to handle, because HDR workflow is not established. Besides there are not sufficient 8K devices, for example 8K master monitor, 8K WFM and so on. Especially at the postproduction, we had to make many versions. They were 8K-SDR, 8K-HLG(BT2100), 8K-HLG(ARIB STD-B67), HD-SDR versions.
But we have successfully finished this project. It was the result of other companies’ cooperation by “Media technology”, “Imagica”, and “Robot”. In addition the powerful capability of Quantel Rio 8K made 8K workflow possible. We experienced the abilities of 8K HDR which are “High Resolution”, “High Dynamic Range” and “Wide Color Gamut”. And we could feel the possibility of 8K HDR production. We think that it will be needed soon at various cases. Although it is tough to keep pace with new technologies. it is important for development. Cooperating and competing with other companies, we continue to challenge them.

Mind-Blowing Results on a Predictable Schedule – Cloud Rendering on “Allied”

The idea of rendering in the cloud is not new, but it’s a concept that has yet to be realized in a large-scale and efficient way in the M&E industry. The peaks and valleys of our workloads seem to be the perfect fit for flexible, scalable cloud resources, but somehow, the value of its use is still questioned. With the collaboration between Conductor Technologies and Atomic Fiction, we have put this issue to bed, and will work to shed some light on the true economic value of cloud rendering. In this discussion, we will explore Atomic’s use of Conductor on the 2016 film “Allied”, where over 5.5 million core-hours were leveraged in the cloud in just over 4 months, peaking at more than 36,000 simultaneous cores. We explore both the quantitative schedule impacts, as well as the more qualitative benefits of cloud rendering, like artist productivity. We also examine how to instrument these changes in detail, which led Atomic Fiction to more than a 50% reduction in rendering cost, overall.

Northwestern University in Qatar and Qatar Foundation have designed and built a state-of-the-art university media center, which combines the latest in broadcast technology, studio design, and digital cinema production to deliver an unparalleled learning experience for future media professionals. The facility - a 515,000 square feet four-story building – includes six studio spaces, four live production control rooms, a fully automated robotic newsroom, nine video editing suites, four audio post production mixer rooms, Foley Studio, two 24-seat post production computer labs, a 3D animation lab, 4K cinema, 4k digital cinema master suite, a four-story LED media mesh on the exterior of the building, and a 400 tile LED video wall in the interior. In addition, the building will include a fully digital museum - The Media Majlis at Northwestern University in Qatar, which will be the first university museum in the country. The building is the largest and most advanced media and communication school in the world.

Solving the Wireless Video Link Lip-Sync Problem with 7msec Delay System

During a major live Rock concert event, Duncan Video Inc, a professional broadcast system designer spotted a major lip sync issue while a wireless camera was in use. On another event, the contrast between the zero delay of the wired camera along with the delay of the wireless once, caused a system brake down and fault. As a result, the wireless camera was barely used.
For Duncan video, the shift to a wireless configuration was inevitable but they had to find a solution that would enable such a delay level of lower than a frame.
ABonAir had recently released its latest word in wireless video transmission, featuring the only 7msec delay system available on market today. That of course meant no lip sync at all! Duncan Video deployed this ABonAir system at a baseball field - the results were unbelievable. Huawei is working together various partners to offer an end-to-end integrated media cloud solution that spans from underlying servers to upper-layer cloud platforms and desktop software and hardware. The desktop cloud system provides a 80 GPUs + 160 VDIs solution. Each user is allocated with two virtual desktops on the cloud. In addition, a converged storage resource pool has a distributed architecture and contains all media materials, which means that data copies will no longer occupy crucial bandwidth. With global data sharing between multiple channels, free data mobility within the resource pool replaces the traditional data migration process.

Unique Robotic Camera Control User Interface for Televised Coverage of PDC Darts Tournaments

MRMC created a unique Touchscreen User Interface to control robotic cameras for Sky Sports coverage of PDC Darts tournaments.
The new system provides an intuitive ‘dart board skin’ whereby the operator touches an area of the board to trigger the camera to move to a pre-stored position. Every possible camera position can be easily stored and triggered via the new UI.
The darts skin application is built upon the new MRMC ‘MHC’ IP-based control system and allows for a high level of customisation to suit most end user environments. The MRMC robotic heads provide a level of speed, accuracy and smoothness that are vital to provide close up camera shots of a fast moving sport such as darts. Developed within a very tight deadline the darts system has brought many operating advantages to both the Premier League and World Cup Darts events so far in 2017. This includes a consistent output of high quality camera shots, a simplified user interface designed solely for the sport, extended distance of control locations and a significantly reduced camera position footprint.

One of the biggest media brands in America, VICE, has grown beyond their magazine roots to extend their presence to mobile and digital. In 2016 VICE expanded to create the 24-hour channel VICELAND, and a nightly news program for HBO, VICE News Tonight.
VICE has a distinct brand of storytelling that covers world issues, music, tech, arts, travel, food, and sports. This unique voice requires a novel way of producing a nightly newscast. VICE News Tonight has no anchor and uses creative graphical effects to transition from one show segment to the next. The VICE brand also uses a minimalist design, which needs to be carried over to their newscast.
To achieve the live production, VICE News Tonight uses a control room designed around Vizrt’s automation workflows. These combine a traditional studio automation workflow with an integrated graphics and video workflow. The result is a complex production executed with high precision from a single interface, controlling the production switcher, audio, clips and overlay graphics.

WetGate for Scanity HDR

Digital Film Technology GmbH (dft) designs and supplies high-performance film scanning technology to customers world-wide. Renowned for it’s gentle, non-contact method for handling film material, dft’s flagship film scanner, Scanity HDR, scans 2K film at real time speeds, and 4K resolution at up to 15 frames per second – making it ideal for large archive facilities, needing to digitise precious, delicate and damaged materials.
dft created an innovative ‘WetGate’ solution which is both non-pressure and aquarium in style, which works with Scanity HDR to minimize the appearance of film surface damage. Unlike traditional wetgate systems, dft’s innovation makes wet scanning as easy to use as standard dry scanning - combining the speed and gentle film transport of a dry gate with all the advantages of scratch removal of a wet gate. It also enables fast and easy switching between the dry and the wet gate scanning modes.
With the dft aquarium design, in addition to the WetGate chamber, dirt particles are also removed by the fluid in a gate pre-chamber and so the film is even cleaned to a certain extent before scanning starts – combining this benefit with the primary dust and scratch removal process reduces both time and costs substantially.
During the beta development phase, dft worked closely with OMNIMAGO to optimise and productionise the new WetGate system, which is now available worldwide as an option for Scanity HDR.
