An interview with Marcelo Souza, Winner of the IBC2017 Best Conference Paper Award25 Jan 2018
1. Tell us a bit about yourself and what you do
My name is Marcelo Souza and I work as the Digital Media Technology Director at TV Globo, the largest Brazilian Broadcast FTA TV. I act as tech business partner for our Digital Properties (G1.com - News, Globoesporte.com - Sport, Gshow.com - Entertainment). I also lead the multiplatform front end development of Globo Play OTT (including iOS, tvOS Andriod, Android TV, SmartTVs) and integration with Globo.com OTT Platform (including OVP, Idm, CDN, CRM/Billing). I have recently been appointed to manage AdTech projects, helping TV Globo on a Digital Advertising landscape.
2. What goal motivated you to submit a synopsis to IBC?
Knowledge transfer is a key component to the world we live in today. The work we do now has many applications and could act as the starting point for many other innovations. IBC is one of the most credited organisations in the media industry and has allowed us to spread our vision and encourage further innovation.
3. Tell us how the IBC platform is helping/helped you/and or your company to achieve this goal?
After receiving the IBC Best Conference Paper Award we received a lot of advice on how we could improve. We have also developed new partnerships and connected with new companies helping us grow our network.
4. Since IBC, what did you and/or your company gain from this?
Since submitting an IBC Technical Paper, TV Globo has been recognised as one of the leaders in bringing a data driven approach to its daily processes. This has increased awareness to the topic and a feeling that we are ready for the future. The interest for this topic has also increased within TV Globo as we have launched big data projects to many different sectors of the company.
5. What advice would you give to those thinking of submitting a technical synopsis to IBC?
The return on publishing your work to IBC is enormous. It is amazing the amount of excellent feedback we received helping us improve and further develop. There is both a personal and industry reward to submitting a paper as not only are you contributing to the growth of the media industry but you are also encouraging others to express their innovations.
